Breaking Down the Barriers to Joining the Australian Girls Choir

Not quite sure what the Australian Girls Choir is all about – or whether it’s the right fit for your daughter?

You might be drawn to the incredible confidence, creativity, and friendships that come from the performing arts, but still have a few questions or concerns about what joining really involves. You’re not alone — many parents feel the same way at first. In this article, we’ll break down some of the most common myths we hear and give you the facts, so you can make a confident, informed decision about your daughter’s exciting performing arts journey.

At the Australian Girls Choir we create a welcoming, safe and inclusive environment for all of our choristers. See for yourself! Come along to our June Open Day to watch a typical AGC class, meet your daughter’s future classmates and chat to our friendly Tutors.

Concern 1: Choir participation takes up too much time

Many parents worry that choir participation will consume too much of their daughter’s time, leaving little room for other activities. At the AGC, we understand the importance of balance. Our classes run once per week and are scheduled to fit within a manageable timeframe designed to complement, rather than compete with, school and other extracurricular commitments. Girls who progress through the choir and are looking for an extension opportunity may be invited to join a specialist group, which is an extra weekly class.

In our bigger cities, we run classes throughout the week on different days, so parents have the option to choose a venue that suits them based on availability, ensuring that participation in the choir remains a joyful and stress-free experience for both parents and children.

“It is a great opportunity for my daughter to learn music, meet new friends and build up her confidence on stage. AGC provides a fun environment that my daughter enjoys her weekly classes very much.” – Jie, SA Parent

Concern 2: Only girls with singing experience can join

A common misconception is that only girls with prior singing experience can join the Australian Girls Choir. This couldn’t be further from the truth! We believe every child can learn to sing if given the correct encouragement and training so we welcome girls of all skill levels, from beginners to advanced singers. Our program is designed to nurture and develop musical talent, regardless of starting point.

Our experienced Tutors create inclusive lesson plans that allow each girl to improve her skills at her own pace. The focus is on fostering a love for singing and music, creating an inclusive environment where every girl can thrive.

“My daughter enjoys AGC because it’s a fun way to learn to sing, dance and perform on stage. A great way to build self-confidence. Very professional!” – Danielle, SA Parent

Concern 3: Is it worth the investment?

We understand that cost is a concern for many families considering extracurricular activities so the AGC offers payment plans to ease the financial pressure. We are committed to making our program accessible to as many girls as possible. Please feel free to reach out to our friendly team if you have any concerns around payment and would like to look at a payment option that may be best for you.

Furthermore, the value gained from choir participation – such as musical education, personal growth, and lifelong friendships is immeasurable. We believe that the benefits speak for themselves, and we strive to make our program an affordable option for families.

“The friendships, role models and opportunities to be grasped are priceless and we thank the AGC for providing this culture.” – WA Parent

Concern 4: Choir involvement will interfere with academic success

Parents often worry that extracurricular activities like choir will detract from their daughter’s academic performance. At the Australian Girls Choir, we believe that participation in the arts enhances academic success. Research has shown that musical training can improve cognitive abilities, enhance concentration, and boost overall academic performance.

Our program is designed to complement schoolwork, not compete with it. We emphasise time management and organisational skills, helping girls learn to balance their various commitments effectively.

“It lifts our mood, it releases dopamine and it gives all those networks a workout bringing protective or neuro-protective benefits for our mental health.” – Professor Sarah Wilson (University of Melbourne)

Concern 5: My daughter is too shy to join a choir

Sometimes, we hear parents remark that their daughter is too shy to participate in the choir; which we believe is simply not true! At the Australian Girls Choir, we understand that every girl is unique, and we create a supportive, inclusive environment where shy girls can thrive. We focus on building confidence, not just through singing, but also by encouraging personal growth and teamwork.

Over time, girls who may initially feel reserved discover their voices, develop social skills, and gain a sense of accomplishment. Our programs are designed to help every girl, regardless of their confidence level, feel empowered and ready to shine.

“My daughter was extremely quiet and shy. Since joining AGC this year we have seen a huge change in her confidence and she has really come out of her shell.” – Kristy, VIC Parent
