How to Grow Confident Girls
Confidence is an essential ingredient for turning thoughts into action and dreams into reality, however research shows that between the ages of 8 and 14, girls’ confidence levels fall by 30%. Schooling, social media and society can inadvertently reinforce messages that reward overthinking, people-pleasing and perfectionism in young women. This means they may be more unwilling to take risks, to speak up in class, or put herself forward for opportunities she’s interested in.
The good news is that confidence is something that can be actively encouraged, nurtured and developed in girls at all ages, which will see them through their school years and into early adulthood.
For more than 30 years, the Australian Girls Choir has been proud to play a role in the growth and development of girls across the country. Our lessons are designed to grow girls through our dynamic curriculum – including confidence, presentation skills, resilience and team work, all while having fun in a safe and nurturing environment.

Develop a growth mindset on and off the stage
There is so much to be gained from putting yourself forward and trying your hardest regardless of the outcome. In AGC lessons, your daughter will always be encouraged to take on challenges, whether that’s new choreography, a song with complex harmonies, or an audition experience. Sometimes this means experiencing obstacles and set backs, which we encourage girls to see as an opportunity for growth. The approach tutors take also has a huge impact on this, and our classrooms are a place where girls are encouraged to take risks and take on challenges. You will notice our tutors always encourage and celebrate hard work and effort (which cultivates a growth mindset) rather than praising choristers for being ‘talented’ (which cultivates a fixed mindset).
Take action and give everything a go
First and foremost our classes are a fun and nurturing environment for girls to explore their creativity and musicality. For this reason, our lessons are always a safe space to try new things and give everything their best shot. Singing and dancing in an ensemble creates the perfect opportunity for experimentation in a safe space with other girls. Tutors are always looking to extend and push our girls if they are looking for it.
Build public speaking and presentation skills
Throughout the year we work with girls to develop public speaking and presentation skills. This includes posture, standing tall and proud, taking pride in their appearance and open body language which all come together to create a polished presentation style. The cumulative effect of this over the semester often has parents saying they can’t believe how much their daughter’s presentation skills have developed!
Develop self-expression in a community of inspiring role models
Our focus on mentoring and role modelling is an aspect of our program that sets us apart from similar organisations. Our senior choristers become positive and aspirational role models to our junior choristers, who delight in learning from the more experienced performers. Lesson plans are also in place to see girls come away with a community of female friends outside of their regular schooling. Girls have a place each week that’s just for them to sing, laugh and have fun in a non-competitive environment where they feel free to be themselves.
Try a FREE class and experience the many benefits of our curriculum
Girls are encouraged to attend a free trial class before joining, where she will participate in fun class activities, allowing her to get a real feel for what weekly lessons are like. It’s not necessary for girls to prepare anything for this class and your daughter will not be required to sing by herself.
