Growth through Choir: How the AGC supports a lifetime of learning

In addition to receiving an excellent music education, there are numerous physical, psychological and social benefits to being part of a choir. By joining the Australian Girls Choir (AGC), girls gain exposure to valuable behavioural learning opportunities, the chance to build their confidence, and develop in so many different ways.

At the AGC, we know that girls grow and thrive when surrounded by other like-minded girls and female role models in an educational setting. Wondering how one activity can have so many positive benefits? Read on to learn more!

Experience the benefits of AGC for yourself at our upcoming June Open Day! Register now for your free class.

1. Soft skills development

A survey of Australian leaders found that 80.5% believe soft skills development (communication, leadership, emotional intelligence and problem-solving) is very or extremely important. Participation in the AGC helps develop these essential skills, which complement your daughter’s social life, schooling and lays a strong foundation for her future. In addition to learning musicianship, singing, dance, and performance skills, the commitment to weekly rehearsals teaches girls time management by balancing choir with other activities and homework. Working towards key events like concerts also builds resilience, helping girls develop communication and teamwork skills necessary for achieving shared goals.

“My daughter began her journey in Piccolo, and I initially thought it would be just another activity for her to try. However, she absolutely loves it and takes great pride in being a part of AGC. It’s more than just singing and dancing for her; it’s been a wonderful way to build confidence, improve social interaction, learn teamwork, and form meaningful friendships with other girls.” – NSW Parent

2. Continued learning outside of the classroom

The benefits of arts education extend well beyond the classroom. Research shows that early exposure to music and performing arts improves verbal memory, reading ability, and overall cognitive function. Learning about rhythm helps enhance focus and spatial-temporal skills, which are crucial for subjects like math and science. Additionally, understanding music structure involves recognising patterns, which improves memory and fosters problem-solving skills, all of which support a well-rounded education.

“In my opinion, AGC is a highly reputable performing arts school with knowledgeable and professional staff who help me, as a parent, nurture my daughter’s academic growth, social development, creativity, and dedication. She enjoys making new connections in a safe, supportive environment while working toward her goal of joining Australia’s leading choirs.” – QLD Parent

3. Blossom through social connections

Studies on engagement in extracurricular activities have widely found that activities outside of school provide an opportunity to increase social belonging and improve mental health outcomes. AGC choristers share a common passion for singing, which helps forge friendships with like-minded girls. In a time where mental health challenges are increasingly prominent, fostering a strong, supportive environment where your child feels valued and happy is more important than ever. Parents often speak about the lifelong friendships that their children form within the choir, as well as the mental health benefits gained from being part of a welcoming, nurturing community.

“AGC gives our daughter an opportunity to build a social circle outside the norm of regular school. It gives her the opportunity to be with other girls who share the similar interests as her.” – SA Parent

4. Creating confident children

In a world where social media often shapes perceptions of confidence, the AGC encourages choristers to feel comfortable in their own authentic skin. While presentation is an important focus, we emphasise ‘performance-ready’ skills – good posture, standing tall, taking pride in appearance, and open body language. We’ve seen firsthand that when girls feel confident and ‘performance-ready’, they are also better equipped for public speaking and various social settings—a skill that will serve them well beyond their schooling years.

“Meeting the girls at the open day, they were all engaging, confident and held themselves with poise. After watching a class, I knew my daughter was not only going to gain valuable teaching for her singing, but also those key attributes that will allow her to thrive and grow into the best version of herself.” – QLD Parent

5. Movement for the mind

Along with physical benefits, the neurological benefits from singing are further reason to join the world of the AGC. Singing releases positive neurochemicals like endorphins, dopamine, and serotonin, which boost mood and mental wellbeing. Singing is also a fantastic workout for the voice, respiratory system, the larynx and other articulators including the tongue, lips, and soft and hard palates. Unlike traditional choirs, the AGC incorporates movement and dance into our curriculum, allowing children to be physically active, without necessarily having to participate in traditional sports.

I decided to enrol my daughter in the AGC because it will be a fantastic opportunity for her to grow as a singer and performer. Singing with a group will help her develop important skills like blending her voice, listening to others, and understanding harmonies. It’s also a great way for her to learn discipline and teamwork.” – WA Parent
